31 january 2010

it seems i was rather hasty in moving my flag to the west as Paul over in troon had a couple of good ones this morning

1520 KOLM Rochester MN 0900
1200 WRTO Chicago 0900
1460 KXNO Des Moines IA 0800
960 WSBT South Bend IN 0800

but saying that would i have got them if my flag was back at 290 deg. for what they are flag antennas are really quite directive ie when i had two flags in use one to the NW and one to the SW i could get BRAZIL on 740 on the SW flag and Canada on the NW flag so i might just have to make my flag rotatable but that would mean making it a bit smaller and would it affect its performance.

the reason i changed to the west was i remembered this time last year i had quite alot of weak SS signals and was hoping it would be the same this year but with the antenna in roughly the correct direction but it has been poor to Caribbean etc so far with only TBN on 820 and ZIZ on 555 showing up regular.

again i didn't record much on the MW band as i was up early and the band seemed VERY average to the west so i had a quick listen on 160m and found MD0CCE bob from the isle of man calling cq i will listen later to see if he got any reply's. as for conditions maybe i was a bit quick in moving the antenna to the west but will see how conditions are in the coming weeks

the MW band is in real bad shape at the moment and i haven't even recorded the past few mornings but i have been checking the band live from 08.00 - 09.00 and nothing of real interest coming through so not alot to report really. there hasn't been much on the MW cluster and there hasn't been alot of mails from the MW circle so i think everyone is in the same boat.

there is still ongoing problems with the video playback on my blog and the guys in charge say they are aware of it and i have to keep editing a post and not even changing anything and publishing it again for the videos to play which is a pain in the ass but hopefully it should be fixed soon.

i have sent DK1MAX max in Germany another hauppauge wintv box for vhf TV dx this time its the usb 2 version which it hasn't got a video mute on it when no signal is present like the usb 1 version i had sent him before so he should be able to see weak signals coming out of the static and i look forward to his reports when the sporadic e season starts also with his PMSDR receiver and also i look forward to John Märsylä reports from the Netherlands who has also ordered the PMSDR

if anyone would like anything published on my blog whether its MW dx TV dx or any kind of dx or pictures of your receivers or antennas just leave me a message.

not alot to report this morning as the MW band was again poor however i did get WABH bath NY on 1380 at 06.00 utc and that was the only one of real interest here. i noticed on the MW cluster that 09.00 utc was not too bad but due to the TV being on and the wife not yet had her wake up coffee i didn't attempt to put it off lol!

i also switched to the east today and got a good recording of CHINA RADIO INTERNATIONAL on 1521 at 1800 but i always say that station runs enough power to run a small city lol CRI is very common here but haven't recorded anything for a while

23 january 2010

another very poor morning on MW and nothing of interest in my recordings. i recorded toth from 03.00 - 09.00 but not a thing of interest and i didn't note any sign of a peak in conditions. i could list a nice long log of regulars like WWKB on 1520 but after you have heard them for the 1000000 time it does get a bit boring the same regulars over and over again BUT!! what i might think is a regular it might be dx for someone else.

i found a video of kens from last year when the transatlantic TV was coming in and on the clip you can hear me screaming on the radio for ken to check band 2 as the USA video was up to CHA4 67.250 and if i can get the video small enough i will put it on here.

MW seemed very average this morning and my recordings before 08.00 utc found nothing of real interest however at 08.00 utc i did actually think the band was fading out BUT!!! on 1380 at toth i got an id from WABH bath NY which is a personal first and it just goes to show what can pop up from which seemed a very average morning. the recording below is not the strongest signal i have had but you can hear the " 1380 WABH bath "

20 january cont

problems with video playback on my blog the admins are working on the fix

20 january 2010

another sporadic e opening this morning but not stable i had NOVA Czech rep on r2 but not so strong(12.37 utc) and TVE Spain on e2 as i type 14.09 the tone on the video below is the video carrier as the muf wasn't high enough for audio

again the MW band was VERY average this morning and the only one of interest was VOA on 1530 from S. Tomé e Príncipe at 03.00 utc HOWEVER i did have a band 1 tv opening to latvia etc BUT !!!! i didn't notice i had the video recording software checked for replacing the last video so all i ended up with was the weak video at the end of the opening DUH!!! also 50 mhz was quite good to the NE which i recorded OZ2PBS who was quite strong and its great to get a sporadic e opening in January even if i made a complete mess of the video recordings. ROLL ON THE END OF MAY !!!!

conditions on MW have been so average i haven't even recorded the past couple of mornings and by the lack of posts on the MW cluster i haven't been missing much. on the antenna front i took away the variable resistor and measured the ohm value where i got my null and replaced it with a fixed resistor of the same value and put some electrical connector blocks where the resistor and balun is so its easy and quick just to swap them around for west or east rather than taking off the variable and swapping it around and trying to find a null.

max in Germany has ordered the PMSDR and i will be very interested to see how it performs. i downloaded some audio clips from the PMSDR website and it does "seem" quite sensitive but what i would find handy about it is the capability to monitor ie 48.239/249/259 etc at the same time for vhf band 1 TV tones.

i was looking through a disk and found a picture from last year of me setting up the 55.250 full wave loop and also in the shot is kens band 1 dipole. we don't go for anything elaborate when we go up to the local high spot its for quickness and for it to be easy to set up and for it all to fit in the car. on that picture is next stop USA.

15 january 2010

my god i was watching the news this past week and DISASTER London has had 2cm of snow and the whole city has come to a stand still ie trains not running garbage not getting lifted in-case they slip jeez when i worked with them up here we were pulling wheelie bins through big snow drifts lol.

even schools getting closed down as it was too cold does the schools south of the border not have any heating. what a bunch of wimps they don't know what cold is at one point it was -17 up here but that's nothing to what the like of Canada etc get when you hear the weather reports on some of the MW stations and they seem to cope fine.

ken last night recorded the thaw on the river last night with the ice breaking etc and rather than uploading it here you can check it out on his webpage
http://www.ayrshirehistory.eu/tadx/transatlantic_logs_january_2010.html

what must the likes of Canada and even Scandinavia think when they see the news from the south UK and its at a standstill just because its -1 lol. anyway not alot to report on MW this morning as the band was below average at best. its actually raining as i type and the layer of snow on the roof has gone so hopefully it keeps up and gets rid of the snow altogether.

Thursday, 14 January 2010

14 january 2010

another poor session on MW this morning and not much about and as i have said before on my blog signals are there but what i class as regulars. there hasnt been alot posted on the MW cluster as well so it must not be only me who is getting it bad.

i forgot to mention on the 12 January ken finally got an id from one of those pirates on 1710 which was RADIO SOLEIL INTERNATIONAL from Boston another good log for ken. at the time of his reception i didn't record that high in the band as i am using a steam driven pc which will record the full MW band but is a bit stuttery on playback so i record 800 rather than the 1600.

more snow again today and when i finally thought i had got rid of the layer of snow on my roof which i am sure is attenuating the signals on MW i have another fresh layer and i think more snow is forecast.

was chatting to Alan from portrush on the MW chat on skype and the discussion got to be about antenna nulls etc and Alan is using a KAZ antenna which is to the NW and when he gets his null ok this lets in Asia etc especially on 1170. i use the dutch station on 1008 or 747 to get my null and when i get it good i have seen Alan reporting Asia etc on several frequencies and especially 1170 but when i check there is nothing just a faint trace of a carrier which i sent Alan a picture to see for himself.

but when i open up my variable resistor all hell breaks loose and the likes of 1170 is just a mess with stations competing. i am not saying Alan's KAZ has a bad back null far from it as Alan's transatlantic logs will show its just another one of those cases where the rule book is thrown out the window on the MW band. the only thing i can think of is when Alan is getting his null its rejecting most of the uk and eu stations but he might have a side lobe which is letting the far east stations come in.

i suppose my own flag antenna is doing what it should be doing ie rejecting everything from the back but boy i would love some of Alan's far east etc logs and when i have tried a flag in that direction the EU wall of noise is just too bad. i have had china on 1521 before but that station is running power that would run a small city lol!

i have just been talking to Alan and this is his response

Well I don't think it's a case of a side lobe as such, I can actually hear VOA on 1170 with the null removed, its at the same level as it is with the null on, only difference is the UK and Europeans are reduced in strength or eliminated enough to let the Asian DX be heard mostly in the clear. The KAZ has no magically gain in any given direction, it's just the null of the back that does the job.

does size really matter
have a read of the review of the KAZ by john bryant

ok we are off to fantasy land now and what i would do if i was the inventor of the Perseus sdr. as it stands for MW recordings there is not another receiver at the moment on the market that comes close to it i am not saying its the best receiving radio but for wideband recordings nothing can touch it.

so below is my vision on what would make the Perseus the ultimate dx machine for me

i was going to put band 2 in there as well but as i have lost interest in that band i didn't bother but having band 1 in there with tv screen with all modes ie pal ntsc etc would be out of this world. imagine setting up some hotkeys to record the whole of e2 r1 e3 etc at the same time then coming back to it and dxing as if it was live again like you can do with the perseus on MW but instead of just audio you would get the tv picture as well.

i know the top of the range icom has a built in tv screen but it has a BIG price tag on it something like 10 grand but the reports i have seen that the tv in it is as wide as a barn door and not really suited for real tv dx and at that price i would want it to make my breakfast as well.

well enough of my dreaming and i think you will have gathered that MW wasn't so good this morning and i didn't find one station of interest

12 january 2010

i have decided to put on here the interview i did for CBTB on 97.1 back in 2003 and not many have heard this due to the fact i sound like a complete idiot on it and my dog (rip simba) decided at that moment she wanted out and started to bark and when a American pit-bull decides she wants out you either take her or you fight lol also my wife was slagging me off for trying to put my posh accent on.

i am doing myself no favors doing this as i even pronounce BAIE VERTE wrong and i do sound bad. my equipment at the time was the sony sb 920 and a 2 x 6 element horizontal stack which when i dismantled it and made single 8 elements i will give you 3 guesses who has one lol!

as i said that was back in 2003 but amazingly it happened again 6 years later and on the same date and roughly at the same time which paul logan from ireland got transatlantic on band 2 which i didn't check as i was having too much fun with transatlantic tv signals on band 1 or was i too lazy to plug the sony in lol!

nothing to report this morning on MW as the band was again poor to north America etc and today i moved my flag from its 290 deg to the west and will see what that brings. i have always said flag antennas have good direction on them as i was a kens and he had some audio from KBRW Alaska on 680 on his KAZ antenna but when i got home there was hardly a trace of it here so i will see what the next couple of mornings bring.

ELEMENTARY MY DEAR WATSON
i only wish it was... i was tinkering about in the shack last night when ken called me on the radio and told me that the local power house westsound on 1035 was off and not only that there was a PIRATE on 1026 in the town about 15 miles away and he asked me if i would like to go and investigate it and see if we could DF it.

so off we went armed with his sony radio about 2100 hours and zoomed down towards the town and we started on the bypass going round the town which i switched on the sony but all we got was buzz from inside kens car and as it was a busy main road we couldn't stop so ken was cutting the engine every few seconds which gave us a quiet radio but no lights on the car LOL!

i thought i heard some Asian music but wasn't sure so we headed to the top of the town near where kens mate first heard it and stopped the car and had a listen but we got only Ireland and some Spanish stations. next we headed for the center of the town where kens mate had said he heard it the strongest but again nothing heard so i asked ken did you ask your mate before we left if it was still actually on and he said he hadn't any money in his phone JEEZ!.

so we went off to find a shop so ken could get some credit in his phone and ken phoned his mate and he said it actually went off a half hour before so it must have been off as we were leaving our own village. kens mate said it was playing Asian music and why did they pick a silly frequency next to a strong local or was it a bit of a coincidence that the local was off and they came on ???.

in the spirit of pirate radio i would like to think they went and cut the locals coax LOL! but westsound came back on at just before midnight that night. what would we have done if we found the station well i don't know about ken but i have a bit of a brass neck and i would have went to the door and said hi LOL! ah well it got me out of the house for an hour on a freezing cold night

OLD PERSEUS FILES

ken gave me a couple of Perseus recordings from the very first day that he got his Perseus back in 2007 and at that time it was around 400k bandwidth and no auto hotkeys and there are a couple of good ids of stations which are no longer on MW which if i get the time i will get some recordings on here ... more to follow ..

9 january 2010

well what can i say about the current MW conditions not alot really even when the sun has seemingly been showing quiet there seems to be a rise in the K index around 05.00 - 06.00 and the so called dawn peak has been poor.

again the likes of CHQR CJOB CFAM etc have all been logged the past few mornings and as i have said last season and before these would have made good loggings but they have been very regular this season.

i haven't been checking the band from 22.00 onwards due to TV noise as the programs my wife watches seem to be getting put on later in the evening so i have started my recordings at 03.00 to be safe.

its still VERY cold here in the south west of Scotland and i think ken recorded it the other morning at -15 or so and some mornings i even have to wrap up well with my gloves on here in the attic and more freezing conditions are forecast.

wish i had more to report but recordings are not showing much BUT Alan in Ireland has been getting great results from Asia etc so i might be tempted to put up a flag in that direction just for some dx.

6 january 2010

not alot to talk about on MW lately the conditions have been average at best with just the regulars coming in. i woke at around 03.30 this morning and had a quick check of the band and noticed my neighbor had left her BUZZ making machine on so i didn't bother recording this morning.

the talk on the MW chat on skype the past few days have been about baluns and ferrite ie the difference on different types of ferrite. for me i just search in the junk box or scrounge some of ken and what make and type they are i haven't a clue and what difference in performance they have i cant say i have noticed that much.

i have used big ferrite rings to small ferrite rings and also made baluns from ferrite in a tube shape and YELLOW ferrite rings which when you scrape them they are silver underneath and the only difference i can say is the amount of windings you can get on them. some of the guys on the chat have been saying XXXX ferrite is better than XXXX ferrite for a particular antenna but none of them have done an actual A/B test so we can see and hear the difference.

the one thing i do notice though that MY antenna only works with 48/11 turns in either side by side or overlapping which i use the latter and if i use any other windings i cant get a null and it seems as if the variable resistor is not even connected to the antenna. the only time i can tell the difference between a ferrite ring is if i get them from ken and he will tell me this came from a tv or this came from a pc lol!

until i hear some good A/B tests showing the difference between particular ferrite i will just keeping using the junk box specials and the one i made for ken on his beverage is a cylindrical tube ferrite with 33/11 turns on it and was a pain to wind but kens results say it all. bellow is two baluns i made for John Märsylä from the Netherlands one for his flag and one for his ewe and the latter was made from the yellow ferrite and john has been getting good results.

i was chatting with DK1MAX today on skype and he was telling me he had some sporadic e going on but not only that he had Greece on e2 which is a new one on there and it is a pirate station from Athens this is the info max got from SV1DH Costas

HNY Max. UR correct, this TV 48Mhz tx is from Athens, running as pirate from various locations!! RAAG have asked MoCom to stop it since last Oct. and action is running. They located already some tx hardware, but it tx again from other location!! Im monitoring the actions since 6m is USELESS now in Athens....73 CUL

the offset frequency for the station is 48.247.52 with heavy sidebands with 5.5 sound and it was showing mostly music videos. there is no info on the name of the station but there is a logo which can be seen below. i did have a check but no sign of it here and it wasn't seen in the south of the UK but it will be possible to receive it via sporadic e in the summer if its still on and we get a good opening.

still freezing conditions here in the south west of Scotland and waiting for ken to upload some new pictures on his web so i can steal them and put them on here LOL!. the conditions on MW are just as bad as the weather and i think there was a solar flare at some point this morning which made this mornings conditions extremely poor.

on the 31 December at 07.00 utc i had a strange one which sounded like some sort of military jingle on 1230 with which sounded like a guard shouting ATTENTION! a few times which i did put on the yahoo realdx group but no responses as yet.

i was thinking back the other day of my alter ego LOL! on the 45m pirate band where i was GM41 Jim and the many good friends i made on that band and the great dx also. this was over 15 years ago and which over the past few years i have had no opportunities to get up hf antennas for transmitting i still keep in touch with some of those stations today via email etc. i really miss talking on the radio but from this qth its impossible to get a decent hf antenna up.

as for dx on 45m many people thought it was just UK & EU pirates that used the band but i worked the pacific and south America , Caribbean USA Canada etc and my wife even made a SSTV contact with a station on the china border which emails were exchanged and qsl cards which i will have to dig out of a box and scan it and put it on here. i used various radios but the antenna that was used the most on 45m was a home made 1/4 vertical cut for 6.670 and i lost count at over 400 meters of 1/4 wave radials which ken took the lot when i moved here he cant see nothing going past him lol!

there was other good pirate bands as well that i used ie 86m (3.470) which i used a 400 foot doublet and the 21m band (13.970) which i used a 2 element quad JEEZ i miss the space i had at my old place. i did use 11m band which i had a 4 element quad but i got bored with that band with all the OOOOLAAAAAA and crap you got on it. so as it stands today the only thing i do is vhf tvdx which has always been my main hobby also b2 fm dx and mw dx and i am patiently waiting to win the lottery so i can buy a farm on a hill in the nw coast of scotland ... i can dream cant i

talking about 6 MHz i do miss the good music pirates that were on around 10 or 15 years ago as they were the only stations that played decent music not like all the thump thump crap you get today and most of the dj"s had an idea about radios and antennas propagation etc not like today ie ask a current dj what ground wave was and he wouldn't have a clue so lets hope some of them get the bug again and get back on the airwaves.
